Back To School – The Perfect Time to Review Your Safety & Security Policy
Back to school season is upon us! It’s a time of transition, change, and new beginnings. It’s also the perfect time of year for churches, fitness facilities, and child care organizations to review their safety and security policies, often times referred to as the Child Protection Policy (CPP).
By reviewing your organizations CPP you’re opening the door for identifying opportunities to increase child safety. Whether you’re evaluating classroom design, communicating with parents or guardians for the first time, tracking or managing health conditions such as allergies, and/or looking to increase overall child safety and security — here are a five items to consider.
- First and foremost, does your organization properly prioritize child safety and security? This has become a hot topic for child-centered businesses in the last few years and continues to be at the forefront of consideration for parents.
- What process or system is currently in place for keeping track of children entering and leaving your facility? Does it take into account special circumstances such as divorce, or child protection orders? Does it offer parents a way to manage the personal information of the child?
- Are your staff, volunteers and leadership aware of who should or shouldn’t be picking up or dropping off each child? Are they able to identify if a person wasn’t authorized to pick up the child?
- How does your staff associate medical conditions or allergies with each child? What is the process for this sensitive and protected information to be communicated?
- Has every adult that will be directly working with the children had a recent background check?
