Ten Essential Easter Safety Tips
Easter is one of the most joyful and highly attended celebrations in children’s ministry. With larger crowds, special activities, and lots of moving parts, safety must be a top priority. From egg hunts to check-in lines, a little preparation goes a long way in creating a fun, secure experience for kids, volunteers, staff, and families.
Here are ten essential Easter safety tips.
1. Strengthen Your Check-In Process
Whether you use an electronic solution or a manual process, you must have a clearly defined check-in and check-out process. This guarantees that every child is properly registered, released only to authorized guardians, documented in attendance records, and that medical data (such as allergies) and current contact information are accessible.
2. Prepare for Increased Attendance
Plan ahead by adjusting room capacities, adding extra volunteers, and ensuring proper adult-to-child ratios are maintained at all times.
3. Clearly Label Allergies
Candy and snacks are everywhere during Easter celebrations. Be proactive by asking parents about allergies at check-in, and clearly label children with dietary restrictions, either manually or by printing the information on the name tag.
4. Organize Activities Strategically
Activities such as an egg hunt are a highlight but can quickly become chaotic. Separate kids by age group, clearly define boundaries, and ensure adequate supervision in each area to prevent accidents or overcrowding.
5. Secure Your Facilities
Limit access points to the children’s ministry areas and monitor entrances and exits. Assign volunteers to hallway supervision and ensure no unauthorized individuals enter children’s spaces.
6. Communicate Emergency Procedures
Make sure all staff and volunteers know emergency protocols, including evacuation routes, first-aid procedures, and how to respond to a missing child situation. A quick pre-service huddle can reinforce that people know what to do in these scenarios.
7. Complete Volunteer Training and Background Checks
Even with seasonal or special event volunteers, don’t skip safety steps. Ensure all volunteers are screened appropriately and understand your ministry’s safety policies before serving.
8. Maintain Clear Parent Communication
Provide parents with clear instructions at check-in for pick-up procedures and where to go for assistance. Signage, printed materials, or a quick verbal overview can help avoid confusion.
9. Keep Walkways and Activity Areas Safe
Decorations, baskets, and excited kids can create tripping hazards. Keep hallways clear, secure cords or props, and routinely check that play areas remain safe.
10. Plan for First Aid and Incidents
Accidents can happen, especially during Easter. Make sure first-aid kits are fully stocked, labeled, and easily accessible. Designate trained volunteers who can respond quickly to minor injuries or accidents.
Easter is an opportunity to welcome new families, but safety should always be a priority. By planning ahead and equipping your team, you can create an environment where kids have fun while being protected. A safe experience builds trust with families and allows everyone to enjoy the day.
